- Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) is seeking fall 2024 Housing Staff Attorneys and Law Graduates to join their team.

- LSNYC is seeking law graduates and/or staff attorneys to join their Fall 2024 class of Right to Counsel (RTC) attorneys.
- These attorneys will work in neighborhood-based offices representing tenants in eviction defense and other proceedings, as part of LSNYC's work to implement New York City's groundbreaking Right to Counsel law.
- The anticipated start date for this position is September 9, 2024.
- The Right to Counsel law was passed in 2017 and provides income-eligible tenants with the right to an attorney when facing eviction in housing court.
- LSNYC's housing practice involves representing low-income tenants in various settings, including defending them in eviction proceedings, handling appeals, and bringing affirmative litigation.
- The work of RTC Housing Unit attorneys also includes conducting community outreach, providing legal information and advice, and performing trainings for other advocates and community members.
- LSNYC is looking for candidates who are passionate about working in a fast-paced environment and using creative strategies to pursue justice.

Responsibilities:

- Conducting intake and providing full legal representation to tenants facing eviction in NYC housing courts through the right to counsel initiative.
- Litigating cases in various forums on behalf of clients, including housing court, administrative hearings, appellate courts, and state and federal courts.
- Developing expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits.
- Providing legal advice and counseling to tenants.
- Conducting neighborhood-based legal clinics and workshops.
- Identifying potential impact litigation by identifying trends and recurring issues.
- Providing trainings to other advocates and community members.

Qualifications:

- Must have a . from an accredited law school and be admitted (or seeking admission) to practice law in the State of New York.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and working in low-income communities and communities of color.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to conduct community outreach in low-income neighborhoods.
- Strong advocacy, analytic, writing, and leadership skills.
- Strong time management and organization skills, including the ability to handle a fast-paced caseload.
- Experience in housing, landlord/tenant, or related advocacy is preferred.
- Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language frequently used by clients is preferred.

Salary Information (based on years of experience):

- 1-10 years: $74,881 - $98,355
- 11-20 years: $100,605 - $118,773
- 21+ years: $124,254 - $135,637
