Organization Pine Tree Legal Assistance Salary Range $67,140 - $104,140 Experience Level Experienced Job Title Indigenous Peoples Unit Attorney Overview Pine Tree Legal Assistance, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to low-income individuals, is seeking an experienced attorney to join their Indigenous Peoples Unit (IPU). The attorney will primarily handle litigation cases and provide holistic legal services to members of Maine's four federally recognized tribes. This is a full-time position with a hybrid remote work option. Responsibilities - Represent individuals and families facing legal issues related to their status as Indigenous People, including cases involving the Indian Child Welfare Act, racial discrimination, criminal cases in Tribal Courts, tribal housing, employment, benefits and services, tribal land usage and other rights, wills and estate planning specific to reservation properties, education, family matters, border crossing rights, treaty rights, and other rights under federal Indian Law. - Work collaboratively with other staff in the IPU to provide high-quality legal services that are responsive to the needs of Maine's tribal communities. - Regularly appear in court or administrative proceedings. - Travel throughout the service area and to statewide trainings and meetings. - Supervise paralegals handling IPU cases. - Engage in community outreach and networking to strengthen Pine Tree's reputation and ensure access to legal services for tribal members. - Develop or update written client education materials and provide outreach and trainings to staff, community agencies, and other groups serving Indigenous People. - Recruit, train, and supervise law student and undergraduate interns and volunteers in the IPU. - Support pro bono volunteers in the community. - Act as a valued contributor and supportive colleague to other members of the office and the program as a whole. Qualifications - Experience working with Tribes and tribal populations. - Indian Law experience and/or extensive coursework in Indian Law through law school. - Admission to the practice of law in Maine or eligibility to practice under MRCP 89(c) while working at Pine Tree. - Admission to the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Tribal Courts (or eligibility to be admitted). - Previous litigation experience and work with individuals who are low-income, and/or who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault is helpful. Compensation and Benefits - Salary range: $67,140 - $104,140, depending on experience. - Employer-paid health insurance with a generous HRA contribution. - Generous health insurance opt-out benefit. - Employer-paid dental insurance. - Employer-paid life and disability insurance. - Annual contribution to a 403(b) retirement plan. - Other voluntary optional benefits include vision and expanded life insurance. - 12 paid holidays, paid parental leave, generous vacation, floating holidays, and sick leave.
