Deputy General Counsel: Providing Legal Expertise and Leadership at Earthjustice

Earthjustice, the premier nonprofit environmental law organization, is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to join their team. This position offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits, along with the opportunity to work on groundbreaking, precedent-setting cases that protect people's health, preserve natural habitats and wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change. The successful candidate will have a . and California State Bar admission (or admission to the state bar of their residence) in good standing, along with a minimum of 15 years of successful experience practicing law. This position reports directly to the General Counsel and is based in Earthjustice's San Francisco office, with the option to work from their New York or Washington . offices as well.

Responsibilities:

- Acting as the lead legal advisor to all environmental program Vice Presidents, Managing Attorneys, Senior Attorneys, and other program staff.
- Partnering with the General Counsel and other attorneys on business issues and data security.
- Managing their own legal portfolio, while also working with an external network of experts for additional support.
- Conducting legal research, interpreting laws and regulations, and applying them to Earthjustice's work.
- Assisting in improving lawyer onboarding and training, and ensuring compliance with legal ethical standards.
- Managing the Senior Counsel for Conflicts and Lobbying Compliance.
- Providing legal advice on conflicts, contracts, and risk management.
- Supervising and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce.
- Identifying topics for legal compliance training for all lawyers within the organization.
- Assisting the General Counsel with identifying and assessing organizational risk exposure, and providing advice to mitigate risk.

Qualifications:

- . and California State Bar admission in good standing, or admission to the state bar of the state of residence in good standing.
- Minimum of 15 years of successful experience practicing law.
- Familiarity with law firm best practices and legal technology.
- Experience with cost-effective management of outside legal resources.
- Ability to quickly grasp complex problems and present sensible solutions.
- Strong attention to detail and care in executing written work.
- Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to manage and work with teams, and to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Support for Earthjustice's mission and advocacy-based approach to solving environmental problems.
- Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Salary and Benefits:

- Annual salary ranges for the Deputy General Counsel role at Earthjustice:
- San Francisco or New York-based range of $208,000 to $231,000.
- Washington, range of $197,000 to $219,000 (also applies to Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Honolulu).
