Position Description:
- Immediate opening for full-time Staff Attorney in Family Law Unit
- Represent low and middle income individuals in custody, family offense, neglect, and child support cases
- Provide specialized legal advice and representation for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Family Court and other civil matters
- Must have caring, patience, and emotional maturity to assist low-income individuals in crisis situations
- Strong understanding of how civil legal issues intersect with social and economic justice

Qualifications:
- Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State or eligible for admission without examination
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities:
- Maintain full-time caseload in Family Court
- Develop and maintain specialized knowledge in Family Court matters
- Provide legal services to low-income clients regarding Family Law
- Collaborate with other LawNY® advocates, human services providers, and community groups
- Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment
- Cooperate in all grant reporting, program reporting, and compliance review
- Maintain high level of professional competence through training and staying updated on poverty law and equity lens

Additional Traits and Skills:
- Litigation and advocacy experience in state and/or federal court and/or administrative forums
- Experience incorporating an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into legal practice
- Understanding of structural and institutional racism and its impact on underserved communities
- Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to providing trauma-informed services
- Lived experience with client communities
- Fluency in a language other than English spoken by clients
- Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple tasks

Compensation:
- Salary dependent on experience and based on pay scale with annual increments
- Beginning salary for Staff Attorney is $58,000, and $64,000 for Staff Attorney with 5 years of experience
- Potential for public interest law school loan forgiveness programs
- Excellent package of fringe benefits, including health insurance, dental and disability insurance, vision coverage, and life insurance
- Generous leave provisions, including vacation, holidays, sick days, personal days, and new parent leave
