Summary: Position: Staff Attorney – Eviction Prevention Unit Organization: Northwest Justice Project (NJP) Location: Yakima, WA Salary: $73,142 to $133,712 per year NJP, a not-for-profit statewide law firm, is seeking qualified attorneys to join their Eviction Prevention Unit (EPU). The position will be based out of the Yakima office and will primarily serve Yakima and Kittitas counties, with potential coverage needed in surrounding regions or statewide. NJP is specifically looking for candidates with experience and a commitment to promoting race equity within the legal aid community. All employees are required to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, with exemptions available for medical and religious beliefs. Job Duties: - Represent eligible individuals in unlawful detainer actions in the Superior Court, as well as assist with unfiled actions as needed. - Utilize strategic methods and advocacy tools to address high priority eviction-related needs, with a focus on marginalized groups such as immigrants, youth, seniors, and disabled individuals. - Develop working relationships with advocates throughout the state working on rental housing related issues. - Engage with at-risk communities and provide legal education events for various groups and stakeholders. - Utilize NJP's case management and timekeeping systems and comply with regulatory requirements. - Provide coverage for the Eviction Prevention Unit as needed. - Travel to courthouses within the region as necessary. - Support NJP's eviction defense partners, including volunteer lawyer programs and other legal aid providers. Qualifications: - Must be a member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association, or able to acquire membership through admission by motion or taking the next Washington bar exam. - Litigation experience, particularly in Superior Court and tenant rights, is preferred. - Experience in housing, foreclosure, or other legal issues affecting low-income communities is preferred. - Demonstrated experience or connection to NJP's client communities is also preferred. - Must be culturally competent and have experience working with marginalized communities. - Must be willing to travel between counties and represent clients in different courts. - Reliable transportation is required. Compensation: - Starting salary based on years of experience, with a range of $73,142 to $133,712 per year. - Comprehensive benefits package, including 100% paid employee health premiums and generous time off.
