# Lead Senior Counsel - Center for Professional Responsibility The American Bar Association (ABA) is looking for an experienced Lead Senior Counsel to join the Center for Professional Responsibility. The successful candidate will serve as legal counsel to an ABA entity and exercise unit management duties within the division, providing national legal expertise in the field of legal and judicial ethics and professional responsibility law. ## Job Description The Lead Senior Counsel will provide legal expertise and policy guidance to ABA governance and ABA entities in developing, interpreting, and implementing the nation’s legal policy governing the regulation of the legal profession and the judiciary. They will also be responsible for developing substantive legal resources to ensure and enhance the Association’s continued status as the preeminent legal authority in legal and judicial ethics, professional responsibility law and professional regulation. Other responsibilities of the Lead Senior Counsel include: - Providing legal expertise, conducting legal research and providing critical legal analysis to the state and federal judiciaries and regulatory entities, and to state, federal and international government agencies and organizations regarding the interpretation and implementation of the Association’s legal policies governing the legal profession and the judiciary. - Providing legal expertise and analysis to lawyers, judges, the public and media in response to voluminous inquiries through scholarly publications, periodicals, reports, consultations, and legal research services. - Overseeing unit legal policy, projects, program planning and execution; - Executing fiscal responsibilities; - Leading strategic planning in the legal discipline; and - Hiring, supervising and training legal and professional staff and consultants. ## Qualifications - Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school. - Well-developed and demonstrated skills in supervising professionals, editing on a peer basis, and interacting with leaders of the profession inside and outside the ABA. - 10 years of significant professional legal experience with at least 5 years experience in legal policy development and advocacy for an organizational entity involved in professional regulation and professional responsibility law. - Superior analytical, communications, research, writing and editing skills. - Member in good standing in possession of an active license to practice law in the State of Illinois, or eligible to obtain admission in Illinois via Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705 Admission on Motion. **Preferred Qualifications:** - Highly organized, self-starting, experience in legal policy development and advocacy for an organizational entity involved in professional regulation and able to work independently and with a team and have the ability to meet deadlines and oversee a variety of projects. ## Salary and Benefits The ABA recognizes the value staff contribute to our success through a generous benefits package that protects their health and their financial security.
