Overview

Cooley Godward Kronish LLP is an international law firm with its headquarters in Palo Alto, California and with offices in key financial centers in America and in China. Apart from Palo Alto, it has nine other offices in the US in Boston, Broomfield, Los Angeles, New York, Northern Virginia, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC and one overseas office in Shanghai in China. Well-renowned as a celebrated Silicon Valley law firm, Cooley represents clients across a broad spectrum of dynamic industry sectors, including technology, life sciences, clean tech, real estate, financial services, retail and energy. In addition to venture capital, the firm's other core practice areas include mergers and acquisitions, life sciences and technology transactions, intellectual property, tax, real estate, and business litigation. With 650 attorneys throughout the U.S. and in China, Cooley’s proficiency and wide range of competencies enables them to seize the opportunities that come their way and create a niche for themselves in the global marketplace. Cooley attorneys bring an inherent passion to achieve success for their clients. With teamwork being the hallmark of their culture, they draw upon their collective expertise across practices to provide their clients with high-quality, cost-effective and strategic advice tailored to the clients’ particular needs. The firms work spans the globe, with an impressive list of international clients across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Cooley’s global assignments range from worldwide brand protection to multi-country mergers and acquisitions, to the largest case in the history of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Cooley Godward commenced its sterling journey, almost 90 years ago in the Humboldt Bank Building in San Francisco. The firm, Draper, Gaither and Anderson, was founded by Arthur Cooley and Louis Crowley in 1920. It was the first venture capital partnership to be organized on the West Coast. It was not all smooth sailing in the beginning as the Great Depression in 1920, along with the world wars and numerous regional conflicts impacted the business negatively and changed the practice of law. The early founders were much more than being extremely talented and competent attorneys, they were people with strong values, with great integrity and respect for the people who comprised the firm. Cooley today stands on the strong foundations laid by these visionary leaders. Some of the greats associated with the firm were, Fred Supple, Bill Godward, Rowan Gaither, Ed Huddleson, Gus Castro and Sandy Tatum, whose names at one time or the other graced the firm’s moniker. In 1958, Cooley formed Draper, Gaither and Anderson, the first venture capital partnership to be organized on the West Coast. The firm also established its prominence in the field of information technology when it formed Raychem in 1957 and National Semiconductor in 1959. Cooley took Genentech public in 1980 and Amgen in 1983, positioning the firm as one of the leaders in the life sciences industry. As the firm grew in size and reputation, it also extended its geographic horizons. In 1980, the firm made a strategic and pioneering decision to establish a presence in Silicon Valley, and Cooley's second office was opened in Palo Alto. In the early 1990s, Cooley expanded beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1992, Cooley took Qualcomm public and soon opened an office in San Diego to support this and other clients in the Southern California region. In December 2011, Cooley opened its Shanghai office. Cooley had been working with clients in China, including Taiwan, on both inbound and outbound matters for 22 years, so the addition of an office in the People's Republic of China's fastest growing market represented a strategic addition to the firm's network. Now a renowned international law firm, Cooley still retains its core values and culture. Among these values is a strong commitment to delivering high-quality work, supporting clients' business goals, observing the highest ethical standards and maintaining a collegial atmosphere with an emphasis on teamwork and mutual respect. In addition, the firm's long tradition of community service and commitment to pro bono work remains paramount.
