Discover the Thrilling World of Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting, Inc Welcome to the vibrant community of Metropolitan Indianapolis, where the airwaves come alive with the captivating programming of Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting, Inc. Known for its flagship television station WFYI TV 20 and FM frequency 90.1, this esteemed organization has been a beacon of public broadcasting excellence since its inception in 1970. The story of Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting, Inc is one of determination, passion, and community spirit. It all began with the visionary efforts of the late Ardath Y. Burkhart, who rallied thousands of women to form "Ardath's Army" and spearhead fundraising initiatives. Through their tireless door-to-door campaign, they successfully raised enough funds to bring TV 20 to life. On October 4, 1970, WFYI TV 20 made its debut with a modest budget of $221,000, nine dedicated employees, and three black and white cameras. Housed on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art under the leadership of Warren Wright, the station quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of public broadcasting. In 1972, the station underwent a significant transformation when Frank Meek, a former Air Force Colonel and Commandant of the Defense Information School, assumed the role of General Manager. His 17-year tenure at the helm propelled WFYI to new heights of success and influence. In 1986, WFYI expanded its reach by acquiring FM frequency 90.1, marking its foray into public radio. This expansion allowed the organization to diversify its programming and cater to a wider audience. The following year, Lloyd Wright took the reins as President and General Manager, further solidifying WFYI's commitment to delivering exceptional content to the community. The growth and evolution of Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting, Inc did not stop there. In December 1995, the organization welcomed Central Indiana Radio Reading Inc. (CIRRI) into its fold. Now known as IRIS, this division is dedicated to providing individuals with print impairments access to the written word, ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunities for all. Today, the WFYI TelePlex stands as a testament to the organization's unwavering dedication to quality programming and community outreach. With three additional digital television channels and two high definition (HD) radio channels, WFYI continues to captivate audiences with its diverse range of content. Furthermore, through strategic partnerships with Franklin College (WFCI 89.5) and Wabash College (WNDY 91.3), WFYI has expanded its radio services, reaching even more listeners in the south and west regions of the coverage area.
