Levy Baker Vilas, the founding member of the firm, set up his practice in Madison and quickly became involved in local affairs. Serving as Madison's mayor in 1861, a state assemblyman for three terms, and a regent of the University of Wisconsin, Mr. Vilas established a tradition of leadership that continues to this day.

Silas U. Pinney, another prominent attorney in the firm, also served as mayor of Madison in 1874. Known throughout the state for his expertise in legal procedures, Mr. Pinney played a pivotal role in establishing the second free public library in Wisconsin. His career reached its pinnacle when he was elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1891. Mr. Pinney's name appeared in almost every volume of the Wisconsin Reports, solidifying his legacy as a legal luminary.

In the early 1900s, Bell, Moore, & Richter, S.C. expanded its practice to specialize in railroad, public utility, and insurance law. Chancey E. Blake and William J.P. Aberg led this new venture, with Mr. Blake focusing on railroad and public utility law and Mr. Aberg spearheading the firm's insurance work. Mr. Aberg's passion for conservation also led to his instrumental role in the restoration of the Horicon Marsh. Today, the firm proudly represents many of the clients that these pioneering attorneys brought in decades ago.
