Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, LLP Reviews

Advice to law firm management: I appreciate that insurance work's paltry rates make it impossible to pay your associates. However, if the equity partners contributed even a small percent of their outrageously high earnings towards the associates you might actually have a chance at stopping the ridiculously high turnover.

Pros: Because this is largely insurance based work, your partner will dump almost all responsibility onto you (contacting client, initial investigation, writing litigation reports, writing briefs and motions). There is a small to decent chance you will argue a motion or take a deposition, but the partners usually do those. Likewise, because your work is insurance based, you will meet a lot of individuals. If you consider these things valuable experience, there is that.

Cons: Lord almighty the pay - it's atrocious. If you have any friends in "BigLaw" you will be the most underpaid of your friend group, and should expect to make at least half their salaries. Likewise, the firm imposes a 1900 billable hour requirement, and a dollar-per-hour-over-1900 bonus structure that heavily incentives you to bill well in excess of that amount. Likewise because the work is insurance based, there is plenty to go around and you will be likely working well into the night on many occasions. By the same token, most insurance cases are inconsequential, and invariably settle without much legal strategy, tactics, or even thought. It's a numbers game for insurance companies. Lastly, even though you may meet a lot of new individuals, you'll always be retained counsel, and any relationship you share ends with the case.

Partners to Avoid and Why: Most have fine personalities, but pass on the G&R Kool-aid when they offer it. G&R should not be your home for more than 2 years. Your personal and professional growth will cease, and your pay will continue to be laughable. Get experience, market yourself, and move to a well established firm that will pay you to the level you work.

Favorite Things About this Firm: Free snacks. The other associates are nice.

Advice to law firm management: Change everyone!!! You are responsible for all of the crap that goes on!

Pros: This firm is great at feeding you a bunch of false things, that in the end will never benefit you. They look down on their workers unless you’re a partner!

Cons: The worst thing is the lack of leadership and Backstabbing that takes place in this firm!!

Partners to Avoid and Why: The big partners, as well as the managing partners. Very underhanded!

Favorite Things About this Firm: Nothing!

Overview

Gordon & Rees was founded in San Francisco in 1974 by Stuart Gordon and Donald Rees, both of whom remain active in the life of the firm. Gordon & Rees was founded on the two key principles of dedication to clients and dedication to employees. Stu and Don created a firm with a unique culture, proven by the fact that many of the firm's lawyers and employees have not worked anywhere else. In 2014, the name of the firm was expanded to Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, adding Miles Scully and Roger Mansukhani in order to recognize their significant roles in the firm’s rapid growth over the past decade.
