The Florida Attorney General's Internship Program offers law students a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in a legal field while also contributing to meaningful work for the state of Florida. The program is open to law students enrolled in an accredited ABA law school, and offers unpaid internships for academic credit or through participation in law school sponsored programs.
The program is divided into various divisions, including Civil Legal Services, Child Support Enforcement, Antitrust, Capital Appeals, and more. Interns will have the opportunity to work on a variety of legal matters, including representing state agencies in administrative hearings and court proceedings, and providing general counsel services.
The Child Support Enforcement Bureau, for example, represents the Department of Revenue in 12 counties in Florida and handles cases related to paternity, support, and enforcement of child support orders. Interns in this division may have the opportunity to appear in court and work on various legal matters related to child support.
The Attorney General serves as the attorney for the state of Florida and is a member of the Florida Cabinet. Interns will have the opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute to meaningful work while also learning about the role and function of the Attorney General.
Internships are primarily available for law students, and applicants must be able to intern for a minimum of 20 hours per week. The number and locations of internship opportunities vary each term, but a summary of each unit is provided to assist students in their selection.
The application deadlines for each term are as follows:
- Summer: January 31 (extended to March 1 for 2024 application)
- Fall: June 30
- Spring: September 30
Students are encouraged to apply early as applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
To be considered for an internship, applicants must submit an application, resume, and a letter from their advisor or university confirming their enrollment and eligibility for academic credit or participation in a law school sponsored program. Official transcripts may also be required.
The program offers internships in a variety of divisions and locations, and applicants are asked to rank their top three choices in order of preference. The program also offers opportunities for law students who are not receiving academic credit through law school sponsored programs, such as Pro Bono Programs and Law School Paid Stipend programs.
Overall, the Florida Attorney General's Internship Program offers law students a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in a legal field while also contributing to meaningful work for the state of Florida.
