Job Title: Law Clerk - Summer Law Clerk Program 2024 Location: Annapolis, MD Organization: Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) Department: Civil Legal Services Salary: - per hour Type: Full Time Duration: 10 weeks (May 20, 2024 - July 26, 2024) Hours: Maximum of 35 hours per week Job Summary: The Law Clerk - Summer Law Clerk Program 2024 is a full-time internship opportunity for law students at Maryland Legal Aid (MLA). Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the law clerk will gain valuable exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities. This internship also provides professional development opportunities, including training in civil law and cultural competency, networking with community partners, and more. Responsibilities: Gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities. Learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. Assist with administrative tasks such as completing forms, organizing and providing supporting documentation, and conducting client intakes. Track policy changes and conduct legal research. Assist with special research or other projects as assigned. Qualifications: (all majors will be considered). Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations. Prior experience and/or interest in law or providing non-profit civil legal services. Good verbal and written communication skills. Interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with a diverse client base. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications. Ability to work within an office environment and have regular interaction via in-person, telephone, videoconference, IM, and email.
