Summer 2024 Homeowner Rights Internship Opportunity at Brooklyn Legal Services Organization: Brooklyn Legal Services (BLS) Salary: Unpaid internship Job Title: Homeowner Rights Intern Experience: None required, but commitment to public service is desired Location: Brooklyn, NY Department: Neighborhood Economic Justice Project (NEJP) Role & Responsibilities: - Assist with litigation and advocacy projects under the supervision of attorneys at BLS - Conduct legal research and draft memos - Develop projects and assist with outreach efforts - Perform clerical work as needed About the Organization: - Part of Legal Services NYC, providing high-quality, innovative representation to address legal needs of Brooklyn's low-income population - Focus on preserving affordable housing, maintaining income support, addressing abusive lending and consumer practices, promoting family stability, and advocating for the disabled - Homeowner rights and foreclosure prevention program uses litigation, policy advocacy, and community education to assist low-income homeowners at risk of foreclosure - Actively litigating cases against discriminatory and abusive lending practices, abusive servicing practices by major banks and loan servicers, and deed theft scams - Statewide leader in policy advocacy for fair and responsible lending, and financial justice issues Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB): - LSNYC and BLS are committed to fostering a workplace that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive for everyone - DEIB committee and affinity groups work to promote collegial relationships and advocate for racial justice and anti-oppression growth within the organization and through legal work - Candidates of color, women, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals are encouraged to apply Health Recommendation: - All employees are strongly encouraged to receive and maintain up-to-date Covid-19 vaccinations, unless unable to for medical or religious reasons How to Apply: - Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to NEJP's director, Shabnam Faruki, at - Use subject line "Summer 2024 Homeowner Rights Internship" - Decisions made on a rolling basis, early application recommended Join the team at Brooklyn Legal Services and make a difference in the lives of low-income homeowners facing foreclosure.
