Job Overview: A law firm is seeking a Tribal Law / Federal Indian Law Attorney to provide legal counsel and representation to tribal clients, focusing on tribal housing projects and related matters. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in tribal and federal Indian law, including familiarity with NAHASDA regulations and tribal court proceedings. Strong communication, research, and trial skills are essential, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and in-house counsel.

Duties:

  • Manage day-to-day legal matters and provide advice to tribe(s) on tribal housing projects
  • Attend meetings remotely or in person for all related projects
  • Draft pleadings, motions, and other legal documents for tribal court or state court litigation
  • Research and analyze legal issues about tribal and federal Indian law
  • Present legal findings to tribal government officials
  • Represent clients in tribal court proceedings
  • Interpret and apply tribal laws, rulings, and regulations
  • Conduct discovery and depositions
  • Collaborate with in-house counsel on legal matters

Requirements:

  • Several years of tribal and federal Indian law experience
  • Licensed to practice law in Colorado, with licensure in New Mexico and/or Arizona as a plus
  • Experience working with tribal housing authorities and NAHASDA regulations
  • Preferably licensed and experienced in practicing law with the Navajo Nation
  • Experience working with other tribes or tribal entities is helpful
  • Ability to travel to and from tribal courts/tribal jurisdictions
  • Additional experience in construction and business contracts preferred
  • Solid trial experience in tribal court(s) and exceptional writing skills required
  • Organizational and time-management skills to meet deadlines
  • Excellent research and analysis skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration with in-house counsel
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active and in good standing in the state of Colorado
  • Experience with Navajo tribal law and policy is highly preferred
