- Essential functions: Provide in-house legal services for Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light, with an emphasis on public utility regulatory matters and litigation, monitor work assigned to outside counsel.
- Basic qualifications: Law degree, membership in the Hawaii State Bar Association and license to practice law in Hawaii, thorough knowledge in commercial and business law, general knowledge and familiarity with the legal areas listed in the job requirements and specialized knowledge in one or more of such areas.
- Experience requirements: Minimum of 4 years of legal experience required.
- Additional experience preference: Experience working with public utility commissions, consumer advocates and legislative bodies on public utility regulatory matters, experience appearing before courts, governmental administrative agencies and/or alternative dispute resolution forums, and working on all aspects of litigation matters from case inception to judgment and appeals.
- Job function: Provide legal services to Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light, including evaluation of legal issues and assessment of risk, in a wide range of areas such as business law, labor and employment law, environmental regulation, real property, securities, finance, compensation and benefits, legislation and litigation.
- Skills requirements: Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, make mature, experienced business and legal judgments, communicate clearly and persuasively, demonstrate a commitment to the company's core values, have strong customer orientation, possess analytical, organizational and conceptual skills, identify and research legal issues, and make quick decisions on multiple topics.
- Responsibilities: Provide work direction and/or monitor work performed by outside attorneys, participate as a legal adviser on task forces, committees and special projects, effectively communicate with senior management, assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures, and participate in incident management teams.
- Knowledge preference: Specialized knowledge in the area of public utility regulation and familiarity with Hawaii Administrative Rules §6-61, specialized knowledge in the area of litigation and familiarity with Hawaii Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of the Circuit Courts of the State of Hawaii, or similar rules in other jurisdictions.
