Corporate Counsel at GM: A Dynamic Role in the Automotive Industry

Location: Warren, Michigan

Job Title: Corporate Counsel

Experience: 3-6 years of transactional and business counseling experience in a law firm or in-house

Overview:

GM is seeking a Corporate Counsel to join its Sales, Service, and Marketing Group within the General Motors Legal Staff. This role provides comprehensive, enterprise-wide counseling and transactional support to sales, marketing, and operational clients of the business. The successful candidate will be responsible for mitigating consumer-facing and compliance-related risks, providing counseling and transactional support to the dealer network team, and supporting the GM Envolve (fleet) team. This role requires creativity, innovation, and an enabling mindset to help business clients design and implement strategies in the ever-evolving automotive industry.

Responsibilities:

- Counsel business groups on complex legal issues, commercial transactions, and corporate governance
- Review, negotiate and draft transactional documents such as purchase agreements, real estate agreements, and commercial/purchasing agreements
- Hire, manage, and supervise outside counsel as needed
- Support the development and evolution of GM's sales, service, and marketing business teams
- Ensure compliance with GM's Zero, Zero, Zero vision and transition towards EVs and autonomous vehicles

Qualifications:

Required:

- 3-6 years of transactional and business counseling experience
- Active license to practice law in Michigan or at least one other US jurisdiction
- Excellent communication skills and ability to think critically
- Strong business acumen and judgment

Preferred:

- Prior experience in the automotive industry, specifically with franchise/distribution agreements and dealership buy/sell agreements
- Adaptive learner with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving business environment

Additional Information:

- This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
