Associate General Counsel - Litigation: $200,000 - $293,700 annually

Job Title: Associate General Counsel - Litigation

Experience: Bachelor's degree and 15+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to practice in at least one state. Minimum 10+ years of substantive business litigation experience with a corporate legal department or a well-regarded law firm.

Location: Partially remote with the possibility of 50-75% remote work. May require occasional travel.

Smithfield Foods, an $18 billion . food company with nearly 60,000 employees worldwide, is seeking an Associate General Counsel - Litigation to provide legal advice and assist with dispute resolution and litigation matters. This role offers a competitive salary and a flexible, hybrid workplace schedule.

Responsibilities:

- Advise the Company's risk management department on general liability litigation matters.
- Manage and coordinate document retention initiatives and responses to subpoenas and third-party requests for information.
- Oversee and/or assist with responses to discovery requests and preparation of litigation holds.
- Manage the defense of commercial litigation matters, including assessing risk, developing strategy, and partnering with outside counsel.
- Prepare witnesses for deposition and trial testimony.
- Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and other legal proceedings.
- Draft and review settlement agreements and confidentiality and protective orders.
- Collaborate with other in-house counsel to advise the organization on dispute resolution and litigation-avoidance matters.
- Review and provide advice on contractual terms relating to indemnification, arbitration, and limitation of liability provisions.
- Use litigation as a tool to achieve business and policy goals.
- Manage outside litigation counsel budget, work, and costs.
- Stay abreast of legal implications of industry trends and assist with developing strategies.
- Assist Chief Legal Officer and Deputy General Counsel in responding to governmental investigations.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 15+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to practice in at least one state.
- Minimum 10+ years of substantive business litigation experience with a corporate legal department or a well-regarded law firm.
- Strong ability to manage heavy workload in a highly dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication, organization, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Sound judgment and ability to think critically and make well-reasoned recommendations.
- Performance-driven with a strong work ethic and a sense of urgency and fairness.
- Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
