A law firm in Waukesha, WI, is seeking an Associate Attorney with 2-5 years of experience to join their team. The ideal candidate will have experience in school law, particularly in handling personnel issues, public issues, and expulsions. Experience in special education law would be highly advantageous. Direct client contact experience with school administrators and school boards is highly desirable for this role.

Duties:

  • Provide legal representation and counsel to school districts on various legal issues.
  • Handle personnel matters, including employment contracts, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Assist with public issues affecting schools, such as policy development, compliance with open meeting laws, and public records requests.
  • Represent clients in expulsion proceedings, including hearings and appeals.
  • Advise clients on matters related to special education law, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, and disputes with parents.
  • Conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and prepare legal opinions and memoranda.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, including school administrators and school boards.
  • Attend school board meetings and provide legal guidance on agenda items and decision-making processes.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys and legal staff on case strategy and management.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • 2-5 years of experience practicing law, focusing on school law.
  • Experience in handling personnel issues, public issues, and expulsions.
  • Experience in special education law would be a significant advantage.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with school administrators and school boards.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Active membership in the Wisconsin State Bar or eligibility for admission via reciprocity.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the Wisconsin State Bar or eligibility for admission via reciprocity.

Skills:
