The Bankruptcy and Tax Staff Attorney position requires a commitment to equal justice and advocacy for low-income individuals, with a focus on Chapter 7 bankruptcy work and Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) work. This is a hybrid position that can be based at any of LSNV's office locations in Virginia, with occasional evening and weekend commitments outside of regular business hours.

Essential functions of the role include screening applicants for eligibility for bankruptcy representation, preparing and filing bankruptcy petitions, representing clients in court, evaluating clients for potential discharge of federal student loans, and representing clients in tax controversy matters. The attorney will also assist with legal outreach and community education projects, as well as engage in advocacy initiatives to further the core mission of the LITC program.

To be considered for this position, candidates must be licensed with the Virginia State Bar or eligible to take the Virginia Bar Exam. They must also become a member of the United States District Court for the Eastern/Western District of Virginia, United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern/Western District of Virginia, and the United States Tax Court. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, and candidates must obtain annual IRS tax preparation certification through the VITA or TaxAide program. Bilingual ability is preferred, but not required.

LSNV offers a starting salary of $65,000-$74,000 per year, based on the legal aid pay scale, and an excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, a retirement plan with employer contribution, and generous leave options.
