This division represents adults accused of felony and misdemeanor offenses, as well as low-income clients facing civil commitment based on mental illness or substance use. CPCS is committed to promoting equal justice and human dignity for all and values courage, accountability, respect, and excellence. As the state agency responsible for providing legal representation to those who cannot afford it, CPCS handles a variety of cases including criminal, family regulation, and mental health matters. They pride themselves on representing a diverse range of clients and therefore require their staff to be culturally competent and able to work well with people of different backgrounds. The internship offers law students a chance to gain valuable experience and training while working closely with experienced attorneys, social workers, and investigators. They will have the opportunity to assist with client interviews, arraignment and bail arguments, legal research and writing, and pretrial investigations. Interns must have completed or be currently enrolled in an evidence or trial practice class and have written approval from their Dean.
