The Georgia Public Defender Council is seeking qualified applicants for the role of First Chair Capital Attorney in the Macon office. This position is responsible for providing zealous representation and advocacy to indigent defendants facing the death penalty.

The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in death penalty defense and client-centered representation. In addition, applicants must have been (a) lead counsel in at least one death penalty case to trial, or (b) lead counsel in at least three serious violent felonies to trial, including at least two non-capital murder cases, or (c) co-counsel on at least one death penalty trial to verdict. The candidate must be willing to relocate to the Atlanta Metro area.

Job Responsibilities
• Directs, administers, and supervises legal service activities for the Circuit Public Defender Office.
• Provides advice, counsel, support and technical assistance to senior management and staff on a variety of legal matters.
• Coordinates and implements due process procedures and procedures for appeals as provided for in applicable legislation.
• Conducts the preparation and coordination of cases prior to and during court trials.
• Provides input and feedback to management regarding policies, programs, and training for staff.
• Complies with continuing requirements to improve effectiveness.
• Creates and maintains a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation.
• Interacts with all levels of state government in a way that promotes respect, encourages cooperation, and contributes to excellent performance.
