With the support of our staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters, we are able to provide equal access to justice to tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders every year. Job Description: The Law Clerk position at MLA offers a unique opportunity for junior or senior college/university students or law school students to gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those most in need. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the Law Clerk will learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. The Law Clerk will also assist with administrative tasks, conduct client intakes, track policy changes, conduct legal research, and assist with special projects. Job Responsibilities: Gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those most in need. Learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. Assist with administrative tasks, such as completing forms and organizing supporting documentation. Conduct client intakes, including using effective interviewing techniques and identifying sensitive issues. Track policy changes and conduct legal research. Assist with special research projects. Other tasks as assigned. Qualifications: Junior or senior college/university student or a law school student; all majors will be considered. Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations. Prior experience and/or interest in law or providing non-profit civil legal services. Good verbal and written communication skills. Interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with a diverse client base. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications. Ability to work within an office environment and have regular interaction via in-person, telephone, videoconference, IM, and email. Duration and Compensation: The Law Clerk position is part-time, with a maximum of 15 hours per week for ten weeks during the semester. The compensation is $17 - $20 per hour.
