Position: Law Clerk (Part-time) Organization: Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) Location: Allegany/Garrett Office, Cumberland, MD, US Experience: Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations and/or law. Duration: 10 weeks Salary: $17 - $20 per hour Application requirements: Resume, academic transcripts, legal writing sample, and cover letter. Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is a non-profit organization that has been providing high-quality legal services to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities in Maryland since 1911. Our mission is to preserve the basic human needs and rights of our clients and to ensure that they have equal access to justice. We are dedicated to empowering our clients and helping them overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and improve their overall quality of life. As a Law Clerk at MLA, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those most in need. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, you will learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. Your responsibilities will include completing administrative forms, organizing and providing supporting documentation, conducting client intakes, and conducting legal research. You will also have the opportunity to work on special research projects and other tasks as assigned. Qualifications: - Junior or senior college/university student or law school student (all majors considered) - Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations - Prior experience and/or interest in law or providing non-profit civil legal services - Good verbal and written communication skills - Interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy - Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with a diverse client base - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and web-based applications - Ability to work within an office environment and have regular interaction via in-person, telephone, videoconference, IM, and email Duration: Maximum of 15 hours per week for ten weeks during the semester. Compensation: $17 - $20 per hour. Applicants may receive credit for service completed through their school program.
