2024 Summer Honors Internship at Office of Appellate Defender in New York City Salary: Paid Internship - $20 per hour, maximum of $7000 for 10 weeks Job Title: 2024 Summer Honors Intern Experience: Current law student Location: New York City Full-Time/Part-Time: Full-Time, 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm) Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt Category: Internship Organization Overview: The Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) is the second oldest institutional provider of appellate representation in New York City. For 35 years, OAD has been a beacon of hope for individuals at the intersection of poverty and injustice. They provide appellate representation for individuals who have been convicted of felony offenses in Manhattan and/or the Bronx and have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment and post-release supervision. Despite the circumstances of their clients' offenses, convictions, and sentences, OAD strongly believes in the humanity and dignity of every human being. They are a beloved community of colleagues who are dedicated to public defense, access to justice, and racial equity. About the Role: OAD is currently seeking 3 interns for their 2024 Summer Honors Internship program. The program offers opportunities to work in either direct appeals or the Reinvestigation Project. The program runs for 10 weeks, from June 1, 2024, to August 9, 2024. However, students may enroll for less than 10 weeks with approval from OAD. Responsibilities: Direct Appeals: - Work on a direct appeal under the supervision of an experienced attorney. This includes reading the entire appellate record, identifying appellate issues, and developing a theory of the case. - Conduct research on cutting-edge areas of criminal law and procedure. - Possibly draft a legal brief and present the case at oral argument before the Appellate Division, First Department. - Assist clients in collateral advocacy, if available. Reinvestigation Project: - Conduct witness investigations. - Consult with experts. - Help identify and digest cases with potential claims of wrongful convictions. - Assist attorneys with research, writing, and litigation of postconviction motions. Qualifications: - Profound commitment to public service and understanding of working with and for individuals from different backgrounds and experiences. - Enthusiasm for challenging inequities in the criminal justice system. - Experience in moot court, trial advocacy, debate, public speaking, or clinics/internships. - Ability to work in a team, value inclusion and respect. - Strong research and writing skills. - Currently enrolled in law school. Paid Internship: OAD believes in compensating interns for their work. They encourage students to seek funding through their law school's public interest resources. However, if a student is unable to obtain funding, OAD will provide a stipend at a rate of $20 per hour, with a maximum of $7000 for 10 weeks. If a student receives funding from their school, OAD will pay the difference. The stipend will be paid biweekly through OAD's regular payroll system and subject to taxes.
