Staff Attorney - Federal Pro Se Clinic: $75,000-$102,400 DOE

Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to advancing civil rights and racial and economic justice through comprehensive legal advocacy. We are seeking a staff attorney for our Federal Pro Se Clinic, which provides high quality legal assistance to individuals litigating federal civil actions without representation in the Central District of California. This is a full-time, exempt position funded by a time-limited grant with the potential for renewal.

Responsibilities:

- Provide procedural and substantive legal advice to pro se litigants in federal actions in a clinical setting
- Review and analyze federal pleadings in a variety of substantive areas (civil rights, employment, contract and tort matters, etc.)
- Prepare forms, guides, and instructional videos for pro se litigants
- Provide limited scope representation to selected low-income, pro se litigants
- Supervise a legal assistant and recruit, train, and supervise volunteer lawyers and law students at the Clinic
- Coordinate with judges, court staff, and community partners to provide pro se services
- Perform grant compliance duties and work with pro bono attorneys interested in representing pro se litigants
- Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

- . and California Bar membership
- At least 1 year of legal experience
- Familiarity with Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Central District of California's Local Rules
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical environment and interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Experience working in a clinical setting preferred
- Excellent communication, research, and writing skills
- Spanish language fluency preferred
- Prior federal clerkship highly desired
