Summary:

Organization: For The People (FTP) is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney with a minimum of 5 years of prosecutorial experience at either the state or federal level. The ideal candidate will have a JD from an accredited law school, be a member in good standing in at least one State Bar, and have a passion for FTP's mission to reduce excessive sentences and end institutional racism. The position offers a competitive salary of $75,000 - $85,000 and a comprehensive benefits package. About For The People: FTP works with prosecutors, system leaders, and community members to reduce excessive sentences. They lead the implementation of Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing, a law that allows prosecuting agencies to reevaluate past sentences and facilitate prison release where further confinement is not in the interest of justice. FTP also supports incarcerated individuals, their loved ones, and community-based organizations in preparing requests for resentencing. They are working to support prosecuting agencies across the country to enact and implement resentencing policies and build community partnerships.

About the Position: The Staff Attorney will partner with members of the Legal Team to execute the core work of the organization - safely releasing people from prison, reuniting families, and serving as a trusted ally with prosecutors across the country seeking to reevaluate past sentences. The position requires strong critical thinking, project management skills, and attention to detail. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that is making lasting changes within prosecutor offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Analyze and synthesize case files, department of corrections records, and supporting documents needed for case presentations
- Prepare cases for presentation to DAs in California and nationally
- Coordinate meetings and respond to inquiries from stakeholders
- Coordinate with the Reentry & Reunification Team to develop reentry plans and strategies for post-release success
- Support the organization's various legal efforts, including research and writing
- Support pro-bono, law school, and volunteer programs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- A passion for FTP's mission
- A JD from an accredited law school
- Current membership in good standing in at least one State Bar
- Minimum of 5 years in a prosecutorial role
- Experience working in a team environment
- Ability to adapt to the changing needs of the organization
- Strong time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in various software programs

Location: The preferred location for this position is California, with the ability to work in the Oakland office at least 2 days per week. However, flexible arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.

Benefits: The position offers a competitive salary of $75,000 - $85,000 and a comprehensive benefits package, including 100%-paid medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, holidays, and paid time off. Additionally, the organization offers 25 paid hours for professional development/coaching and the option to enroll in a 403(b) retirement plan.
