Job Title: Term Law Clerks to Senior District Judge Larry A. Burns

Qualifications

• Law school graduate
• Substantial prior legal experience, preferably two years or more in complex litigation
• Thoughtful, engaging, and succinct writers
• Willing to commit to a 24-month term at the outset
• Prior experience as a federal court law clerk is also highly valued

Responsibilities and Duties

• Managing half of Judge Burns’ civil docket
• Drafting orders on substantive motions
• Keeping cases moving in a timely fashion
• Interacting with counsel
• Briefing Judge Burns prior to hearings and trials
• Assisting with legal research, drafting orders, and addressing motions for compassionate release
• Research and writing responsibilities associated with Ninth Circuit or out-of-district assignments

Salary Range

• Grade JSP 11: $78,307 - $101,796
• Grade JSP 12: $93,858 - $122,016
• Grade JSP 13: $111,609 - $145,090

Bar Membership & Salary Level

• To be placed at Grades 12 or 13, you must be a member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory, or Federal Court of general jurisdiction.
• For attorneys entering the federal court system for the first time, to qualify for grade 12, an individual must have one year of legal work experience after graduation from law school. To qualify for grade 13, an individual must have two years of legal work experience after graduation from law school. All entering attorneys will be placed at salary range minimum.
• For current federal employees, salary placement will be determined by highest previous grade and step.

Legal Work Experience

Legal work experience is progressively responsible experience in the practice of law, in legal research, legal administration, or equivalent experience received after graduation from law school. Major or substantial legal activities while in military service may be credited, on a month-for-month basis whether before or after graduation, but not to exceed one year if before graduation from law school.

Personal Characteristics

Chambers is hardworking but social. A personality fit is paramount, and personal accountability is a must. This is not the clerkship that goes to whomever can produce the most glistening transcript. Judge Burns’s civil clerks both previously worked as associates at large international law firms. One graduated from Harvard Law School and the other graduated from Georgetown University Law Center. Their diverse non-legal experience includes studying and traveling abroad, service in the Peace Corps, speaking multiple languages, and performing charitable work.
