Part-Time Law Clerk Opportunity at Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is seeking a Part-Time Law Clerk to join our team in providing life-changing civil legal assistance to eligible residents in every part of the state. With a history dating back to 1911, MLA has been dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. We rely on the support of our staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters to ensure equal access to justice for the economically disadvantaged and vulnerable populations we serve. Position: Part-Time Law Clerk Organization: Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) Location: Allegany/Garrett Office, Cumberland, MD, US Salary Range: to Annually Requisition ID: 2215 Duration: 10 weeks during the semester, maximum 15 hours per week Job Summary: Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the Part-Time Law Clerk will gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those most in need. This position will involve learning about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management, as well as completing administrative forms, organizing and providing supporting documentation, and conducting client intakes. The Law Clerk will also have the opportunity to track policy changes, conduct legal research, and assist with special projects as assigned. Qualifications: - Junior or senior college/university student or law school student (all majors will be considered) - Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations - Prior experience and/or interest in law or providing non-profit civil legal services - Good verbal and written communication skills - Interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy - Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with a diverse client base - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications - Ability to work within an office environment and have regular interaction via in-person, telephone, videoconference, IM, and email Compensation: The Part-Time Law Clerk position offers a competitive hourly rate of $17 to $20 per hour.
