Staff Attorney- Homelessness Prevention Law Project (PEHP Team) • Homelessness Prevention Law Project • Full-time position at Public Counsel, a nonprofit public interest law firm • Dedicated to advancing civil rights, racial and economic justice • Committed to building a diverse staff and encourages applications from all backgrounds • Serving individuals at risk of becoming homeless or currently unhoused • Providing legal services, education, and outreach to promote healthy and resilient communities • Focused on litigation and policy advocacy in Los Angeles and beyond • Eight legal projects including Children’s Rights, Community Development, and Consumer Rights & Economic Justice • Full-time staff of over 150 • Providing wraparound, trauma-informed legal services to individuals in Los Angeles County • Removing barriers to housing through legal intervention • Supporting local tenants in obtaining and preserving COVID-related eviction protections • Working with community-based organizations to provide know-your-rights presentations • Teaming up with other non-profit legal services providers, tenant organizers, and community-based organizations • Reporting to the Supervising Staff Attorney • Based at Public Counsel’s main office with some off-site work in South Los Angeles • Part of the “Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project” (PEHP) • Working with a team of attorneys and coordinators • Providing full-scope legal representation and limited scope services • Juris Doctor degree and member in good standing of the California Bar • Relevant poverty law or volunteer experience preferred • In-court litigation and/or eviction defense experience a plus • Comfort with trauma-informed legal advocacy • Excellent time management and communication skills • Commitment to race equity work and community lawyering • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse client base • Attention to detail and strong written and oral communication skills • Ability to commute throughout Los Angeles County as needed • Full-time, Exempt position with a salary range of $75,000 - $83,800 DOE • Competitive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage • 403(b) retirement plan and employer-paid life insurance and disability plans • Generous paid time off and compensatory time • On-site parking or public transportation reimbursement available • Discuss lived experiences and experiences working with clients in cover letter • Public Counsel requires vaccination against COVID-19 for all employees • Remote work permitted during pandemic, but employees must work in office at least one day per week • Public Counsel is an Equal Opportunity Employer that does not discriminate against employees or prospective employees on any basis prohibited by law, including criminal histories
