H2: Gain Valuable Experience and Make a Difference in Your Community Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is seeking a part-time Law Clerk to join our team at the Allegany/Garrett Office in Cumberland, MD. As a Law Clerk, you will gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those most in need, and learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. MLA has been providing high-quality legal services to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities since 1911. Our mission is to preserve the basic human needs and rights of our clients, and ensure equal access to justice for all. With the support of our staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters, we are able to be a voice for tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders every year. As a Law Clerk at MLA, you will have the opportunity to: - Learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management - Complete administrative forms and organize supporting documentation - Conduct client intakes using basic interviewing techniques - Track policy changes and conduct legal research - File and mail relevant documents - Assist with special research or other projects as assigned Qualifications: - Junior or Senior college/university student or law school student - Prior experience and/or interest in working with low-income populations - Prior experience and/or interest in law or providing non-profit civil legal services - Good verbal and written communication skills - Interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy - Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with a diverse client base - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications - Ability to work within an office environment and have regular interaction via in-person, telephone, videoconference, IM, and email Duration: Maximum of 15 hours per week for ten weeks during the semester. Compensation: $17 - $20 per hour. Applicants may receive credit for service completed through their school program.
