Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney
The candidate without supervision, prepares and tries felony criminal cases, especially high priority and serious class A and class B felony cases, in Superior Court; prepares and presents both written briefs and oral arguments to appropriate courts of appeal as necessary on felony criminal matters. Primary duty is to handle a full felony caseload, including high priority and serious class A and class B felony cases, while assisting other deputies in matters of tactics, trial strategy and legal research; undertakes, on short notice, the trial of a felony case prepared by another deputy who is unable to try, due to schedule conflict. Researches, prepares and presents briefs at Superior Court and potentially at the court of appeals, and to present oral argument. May handle or assist in the handling of specialty treatment courts. Advises and works with law enforcement to assure thorough investigation of cases and application of proper law enforcement practices in order to assure efficient and appropriate prosecution. Must also be able to perform all essential functions associated with Deputy Prosecuting Attorney III above. May be tasked with performing related duties. Must be a graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association and must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association with 5 years of practice as an attorney and have 3 years trial experience in the trial of criminal cases. Requires knowledge of: Traffic, juvenile and criminal laws of the State of Washington; rules and procedures of district and superior courts; basic techniques of preparation of traffic and criminal cases. County and local government ordinances, policies and all other applicable regulations and how they interrelate to the authority and legal functions of County government. Must have ability to: Must be able to handle all phases of the most complex felony cases without supervision; perform legal research; analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and precedents to legal problems; present law, facts, evidence, and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form; work harmoniously with law enforcement and court personnel and maintain good public relations. Should be licensed and in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association.
