INTRODUCTION:

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney is looking for an experienced prosecutor for the position of Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney

Unit : Domestic Violence


ABOUT THE ROLE
Assigned to one of five units: Violent Crimes, Special Investigations, Domestic Violence, Juvenile Offenders, or Special Victims. The position reports directly to their unit’s Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney. Duties will include overseeing daily dockets that are not otherwise assigned, handling a full caseload at all levels of Court, serving as “Duty Attorney” and responding to calls and questions from citizens, law enforcement, and defense counsel; Attending Relevant training; and Engaging with members of the Community we serve.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Juris Doctorate degree and 3 years of related experience.

PREFERENCES
Position requires a Juris Doctorate degree and five or more years of related experience. The selected applicant must: be skilled at legal research and writing; be able to work both independently and collaboratively in an office that values civility, initiative, sound judgment and skilled advocacy.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing

NATURE OF WORK
This class is part of the Legal Job Family. Incumbents manage legal cases in several assigned areas or represent the County in complex, highly public legal matters of an assigned area. Incumbents work under limited supervision. Responsibilities may include: coordinating legal activities; providing legal advice, assistance and training; conducting legal research; and representing the County in court. Incumbents have more legal experience and routinely interact with management/department heads. Incumbents may serve as a lead worker to lower level employees.

This position is responsible for representing the County in complex, highly public legal matters and may serve as a lead worker to subordinate staff members.

TYPICAL CLASS RESPONSIBILITIES (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
1. Administers lead direction for case assignments and completes a full breadth of complex legal cases and assignments.
2. Develops cases by reviewing police reports and criminal investigations; drafts and recommends policies and procedures for law enforcement staff.
3. Provides legal advice and analysis to internal staff and Boards on a variety of local government, real estate, employment, workers' compensation, public records, and/or other related legal issues, which includes interpreting and applying statutes, case law, ordinances, and administrative regulations.
4. Coordinates legal review of departmental staff reports, resolutions, and ordinances.
5. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
