The successful candidate will work individually and in legal teams, as well as on cross-functional R&D and business teams across various geographies and time zones. You will be responsible for identifying patentable subject matter, creating and implementing effective IP strategies, assessing third party landscapes, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, directing foreign counsel, and advising internal stakeholders and decision-makers. This role requires a strong background in both molecular biology and computer sciences, as well as experience in patent law for AI and machine learning (ML).

This Senior IP Counsel position can be remotely located within the United States or work from one of our office locations in Thousand Oaks, CA, Cambridge, MA, or South San Francisco, CA. To be considered for this role, you must have a . degree or . degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to practice law in a . jurisdiction. Alternatively, you must have four plus (4+) years of experience practicing intellectual property law or be registered to practice before the . Patent and Trademark Office. A . or . in computer science, bioengineering, computational biology, bioinformatics, mathematics, or electrical engineering is also acceptable.

Preferred qualifications for this role include ten (10) or more years of experience practicing patent or intellectual property law, with at least five (5) years in the area of AI, ML, deep learning, data sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics, or bioengineering. An advanced degree such as a master's degree or . in Computer Science, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, or Bioinformatics, or in another discipline with a dissertation or thesis having a significant AI/ML component is highly desirable. Experience in conducting freedom to operate analyses and protecting software and AI/ML inventions globally through patent procurement, copyright, and/or trade secrets is also preferred.

In addition to the qualifications mentioned above, the ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of basic molecular biology and experience in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as knowledge of the drug development process. Excellent analytical and legal writing skills are also essential for success in this role, along with outstanding communication and collaborative skills necessary to effectively partner with data scientists and other stakeholders in highly cross-functional teams. Strong management and leadership skills are also required, as well as the ability to work independently and in teams, prioritize workflow and work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
