Position Summary:
- The Health Attorney or Senior Health Attorney will play a key role in advocating for a variety of health-related poverty law issues throughout California.
- This position will involve high impact litigation, policy advocacy, and providing assistance and training to local legal services attorneys.
- The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of issues such as Medi-Cal, healthcare disparities, racial justice, and social determinants of health.
- This position reports to the Deputy Director and is based in one of Western Center's three offices in California.

Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the health team to develop strategies for ensuring equitable access to affordable, quality healthcare for all Californians.
- Initiate and maintain a caseload of impact litigation related to advancing universal healthcare coverage, eliminating medical debt, and addressing healthcare disparities.
- Engage in policy and administrative advocacy at the local, county, state, and federal levels.
- Provide expertise and support to legal services organizations through consultation, technical assistance, publications, training, and education.
- Work with policy advocates in Sacramento on health-related budget and legislative initiatives.
- Represent Western Center in various coalitions, stakeholder forums, and boards.
- Draft and disseminate reports, legal analyses, and educational materials.
- Some in-state travel and long hours may be required.

Qualifications:
- Admitted to practice law in California.
- At least five years of experience as an attorney in California or another state (nine years for Senior Attorney role).
- Experience representing low-income clients in affirmative lawsuits preferred.
- Strong litigation skills in any practice area.
- Passion for health care, racial justice, and anti-poverty policy.
- Experience working with historically marginalized communities.
- Prior work at a legal services or community-based organization is a plus.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to think creatively, be strategic, and exercise good judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Compensation:
- Salary is very competitive and commensurate with experience.
