Job Description:

The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking law clerks for various positions, including the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, Superior Court Assignment Judges, and the Tax Court. These positions involve conducting research, analyzing legal data, preparing legal memoranda, processing emergent motion applications, and proofreading published opinions. Law clerks for assignment judges will also learn about court administration and assist with processing emergent motions. Trial court law clerks will gain practical experience and valuable insight into the judicial process by observing proceedings, attending conferences with attorneys and judges, and receiving training in mediation. Tax Court law clerks will perform similar duties to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, but will not mediate cases.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for a law clerk position, you must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association. The Judiciary's law clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential for this role. It is helpful to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship.

- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval, as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A valid driver's license is required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but selected candidates must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
- All applicants must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting, which will be kept confidential.
- Pursuant to the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary must establish and maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey. However, law clerks are exempt from this requirement during their 53-week term. Additionally, law clerks who serve a second clerkship in a higher court are also exempt from the residency requirement.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available, with limited positions in the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, Superior Court Assignment Judges, Superior Court Chancery Division in general equity court, and the Tax Court. Most openings exist in the Superior Court Law Division in civil and criminal court and the Superior Court Chancery Division in family court.
