They are dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and rights of their clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. MLA relies on the support of their staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters to ensure that those most in need have equal access to justice. The Summer Law Clerk Program at MLA is a full-time opportunity for law students to gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of providing civil legal services to those in need. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, law clerks will have the chance to learn about basic policies and procedures of legal practice, office administration, and non-profit management. They will also have the opportunity to develop their skills in conducting client intakes, legal research, and assisting with special projects. Professional development opportunities, such as training in civil law and cultural competency, are also provided through this internship. Qualifications for this position include being a junior or senior college/university student or a law school student, with a strong interest in working with low-income populations and providing non-profit civil legal services. Good communication skills, an interest in dispute resolution and legal advocacy, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications are also required. The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, diverse environment is also essential. This internship program runs from May 20, 2024, to July 26, 2024, for a maximum of 35 hours per week for ten weeks during the summer. The compensation for this position ranges from $17 to $19 per hour, with the possibility of receiving credit for service completed through a school program. Interested applicants are required to submit a resume, academic transcripts, a legal writing sample, and a cover letter describing their interest and qualifications. References will also be required at the time of the final interview.
