Managing Attorney – Legal Advice Line: Full-Time Role with Competitive Salary and Benefits

BayLegal seeks a driven and dedicated Managing Attorney to join our team in Oakland, CA. As a non-profit legal services organization, BayLegal is committed to promoting social justice and providing legal assistance to low-income communities in the Bay Area. The Managing Attorney will be a key member of our senior management team, working collaboratively with other Directors and Managing Attorneys to lead our Legal Advice Line.

Responsibilities:

- Manage the Legal Advice Line hotline, ensuring efficient provision of services and workload management
- Conduct hotline analytics to evaluate trends, employee performance, and client services
- Provide supervision, mentorship, evaluation, and professional development to the team
- Lead and support team members in identifying important and emerging issues facing the client community
- Identify opportunities for systemic advocacy and oversee team advocacy efforts
- Participate in staff recruitment, hiring, and discipline
- Engage the team in annual planning and periodic reviews of priorities
- Conduct and coordinate staff trainings on relevant topics
- Manage client services projects and grants, including budgeting and reporting
- Promote BayLegal's mission and resource development through collaboration with development teams and funders
- Serve on the Management Team and contribute to organizational policies and procedures
- Collaborate with the Pro Bono Director on developing and maintaining external pro bono relationships
- Engage in other tasks and projects to further BayLegal's mission and operations

Requirements:

- Humility and commitment to working with diverse colleagues and clients
- Knowledge of and compliance with California Rules of Professional Conduct, BayLegal funding requirements, and firm standards
- Proficiency in technological equipment and software necessary for the position
- Experience managing a legal hotline
- Fluency in one or more BayLegal core languages
- Membership in the California State Bar or eligibility to practice in California under the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program
- Seven or more years of practice as a licensed attorney, with experience in BayLegal's areas of practice
- Three or more years of supervision or equivalent experience
- Willingness to work on-site at BayLegal office as needed
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by date of hire
- Knowledge of issues facing low-income, unhoused, and marginalized individuals
- Experience leading projects and overseeing compliance, evaluation, and reporting
- Commitment to promoting racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Sense of humor, curiosity, and self-direction
- Experience collaborating with public, non-profit, and private partners
- Experience leading a diverse team and identifying professional development opportunities
- Experience addressing and resolving conflicts

Hybrid Work Option:

BayLegal values the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community. Our employees are expected to work on-site and in-person at least three days per week at a BayLegal office or community-based advocacy site, with the option to work remotely on a part-time basis. Employees must reside in California and be able to commute to their physical BayLegal base location and other service delivery locations as needed during the standard work week.

Compensation and Benefits:

BayLegal offers a diverse and family-friendly work environment, along with a competitive salary and benefits package. The estimated annual salary range for this position is $120,000 – 160,000, based on years of related experience. Our benefits package includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, and life insurance for employees and up to 60% for dependents, a student debt reimbursement program, long-term disability insurance, an employee assistance program, a dependent childcare employer contribution program, paid Bar and social work license fees, and a 401k retirement plan with BayLegal contribution. We also offer a generous paid leave policy, including sick leave, parental leave, holidays, floating holidays, and vacation time.
