Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is seeking a full-time Bankruptcy and Tax Staff Attorney to join our team and make a meaningful impact in the lives of low-income individuals. As a Bankruptcy and Tax Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for maintaining high standards in individual client representation and advocating for equal justice for low-income individuals. This is a hybrid position that will involve working on both Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases and Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) cases. The position can be based at any of our office locations in Virginia, with occasional evening and weekend commitments outside of regular business hours.
Your essential functions in this role will include screening applicants for eligibility for bankruptcy representation, working with clients to gather necessary information for bankruptcy court, preparing and filing bankruptcy petitions, and representing clients in court. You will also evaluate clients for potential discharge of federal student loans and represent them in court if applicable. Additionally, you will be responsible for evaluating and representing clients in tax controversy matters before the IRS and other courts, as well as assisting with legal outreach and community education projects and initiatives.
To qualify for this position, you must be licensed with the Virginia State Bar or eligible to take the Virginia Bar Exam. You must also become a member of the United States District Court for the Eastern/Western District of Virginia, United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern/Western District of Virginia, and the United States Tax Court. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, and bilingual ability (English plus either Spanish, Korean, or Arabic) is preferred. Prior bankruptcy or tax experience or participation in a law school LITC or Bankruptcy Clinic is also preferred.
The starting salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on the legal aid pay scale ($65,000-$74,000 per year).
