Summary: Organization: Western Center on Law and Poverty Job Title: Health Attorney or Senior Health Attorney Experience: At least 5 years for Attorney role, 9 years for Senior Attorney role Salary Range: Starting at $77,000 for Attorney role, $98,000 for Senior Attorney role Location: Los Angeles, Oakland, or Sacramento Website: The Western Center on Law and Poverty, a leading organization in the fight against poverty, is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic attorney to join their health team. This position offers the opportunity to advocate on a variety of health-related poverty law issues throughout California, including leading high impact litigation, policy advocacy, and providing assistance and trainings to legal services attorneys. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of health care and racial justice issues and be committed to addressing race-based inequities. This position reports to the Deputy Director and is based in either the Los Angeles, Oakland, or Sacramento office. Responsibilities: - Collaborate with the Western Center health team to develop strategies for equitable access to affordable, quality health care for all Californians - Maintain a caseload of impact litigation related to advancing universal affordable health coverage, eliminating medical debt, and addressing health disparities - Work on impact litigation in other subject areas as needed - Advance programmatic work through litigation, policy and administrative advocacy - Advocate for policy changes at the local, county, state, and federal level - Provide expertise and support to legal services organizations - Work closely with policy advocates in Sacramento on health-related initiatives - Represent Western Center in coalitions, forums, and boards - Draft and disseminate reports, legal analyses, and educational materials - Some travel and long hours may be required Qualifications: - Admitted to practice law in California - At least 5 years of experience as an attorney (9 years for Senior Attorney role) - Experience in affirmative lawsuits preferred - Strong litigation skills in any practice area - Passion for health care, racial justice, and anti-poverty policy - Experience working with marginalized communities - Prior work at a legal services or community-based organization is a plus - Exceptional written and oral communication skills - Ability to think creatively, be strategic, and exercise good judgment - Ability to work independently and in a team setting - Commitment to diversity and inclusion Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package and opportunities for professional development. The salary range begins at $77,000 for the Attorney role and $98,000 for the Senior Attorney role, with increases based on experience.
