LawCrossing: Availability of Legal Jobs Continues to Increase Despite Slower Season
November 28, 2006
According to the latest report by LawCrossing, the world's largest legal career placement website, data for the month of November have shown growth in the legal careers sector despite the traditional seasonal lag in hiring.

The real news has to do with how much more resilient the job market is this year than it was last year. In all categories except for human resources and legal administration the markets have grown, and the legal job market has been consistently growing with no signs of slowing down. The number of paralegal positions has increased by 6,775 jobs since November of 2005, the number of legal secretary positions has increased by 4,785 jobs, and the number of information technology positions has increased by 2,024 jobs.

Based on a comparison with last month's data, the number of law firm jobs has increased in the Northeast, from 2,240 in October to 2,479 this month. The Northeast has also shown growth in the availability of in-house positions, although the region lost 40 jobs in the government sector. The Mid-Atlantic region had 216 more law firm jobs this month than it did last month, and its number of in-house jobs increased by 41. A small but encouraging boost that led to 30 new government jobs occurred in the region, as well.

The South showed an increase of 117 law firm positions but lost half a dozen in-house positions and 80 government positions. Data for the Midwest showed the addition of 73 law firm jobs and 14 in-house jobs. The total number of government positions declined in the Midwest by 7 jobs. In the Southwest region, the number of law firm positions went up by 27 jobs, with an increase of 10 in-house positions and a modest boost of 14 government jobs. Employment prospects in the West increased sharply, with 210 new law firm positions filled during the month of November. The region showed a modest decline in the number of in-house positions, losing 5 jobs in this sector, but the number of government jobs increased dramatically, by 93 jobs.

"The strong market may be a sign of a good economy, but our members depend on us to guide them through all of the changes in the job field, regardless of the trends," stated Harrison Barnes, CEO of LawCrossing.

LawCrossing's team of 200 researchers and editorial staff monitors the hiring trends at more than 1 million legal employers. With more than 50,000 U.S. legal jobs in its database, LawCrossing counts tens of thousands of law students, attorneys, and legal staff professionals as members.
