Senior Legal Counsel - Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS: A Global Opportunity for Experienced Business Lawyers

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join their Global External Innovation and Business Development legal team as the primary in-house legal support for Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS. This is a global position, with locations in New Brunswick, New Jersey; South San Francisco, California; Shanghai, China; London, England; Beerse, Belgium; and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This role offers a unique opportunity for experienced commercial lawyers to work with a global life science network for innovation, providing startups with access to capital-efficient lab space and resources. The Senior Legal Counsel will support the JLABS team in a variety of commercial agreements and transactions with external companies and institutions, as well as advise on relevant legislation. They may also work on external collaborations and projects initiated by the wider Global External Innovation or JBD businesses.

The successful applicant will work closely with and be a trusted advisor to the Global Head of JLABS and her global leadership team, participating in leadership meetings to provide legal support. They must have a law degree and license to practice as a lawyer in a J&J Innovation location, with a minimum of 10 years’ legal experience at a top national or international law firm or in-house legal department of national or international reputation. Experience in the life sciences industry is preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal support to the global JLABS team, managing relationships with external collaborators, suppliers, and outside counsel
• Draft agreements to support and implement the JLABS model
• Advise on relevant legislation, including crowd sourcing contests called Quick Fire Challenges
• Work on external collaborations and projects initiated by the wider Global External Innovation or JBD businesses
• Participate in leadership meetings to provide legal support

Qualifications:

• Law degree and license to practice as a lawyer in a J&J Innovation location
• Minimum of 10 years’ legal experience at a top national or international law firm or in-house legal department of national or international reputation
• Experience in the life sciences industry is preferred
• Ability to provide outstanding legal services in a fast-paced, highly matrixed environment
• Ability to effectively partner across legal and other functional areas
• Experience with strategic transactions, startups, incubators, or accelerators in the life science industry is preferred
• Experience advising on contest rules and social media is a plus

Compensation:

The base pay range for this position is $160,000-$276,000. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. Employees may also be eligible for company employee benefit programs such as health insurance, savings plan, pension plan, disability plan, vacation pay, sick time, holiday pay, and work, personal and family time off.
