Candidates will: Provide legal representation to indigent defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors in the First Judicial District Court, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Handle cases from appointment of counsel through disposal of post-trial motions and filing of notice of appeal. Communicate with, advise, and counsel clients regarding their cases. Conduct client visits at the office and at the jail. Be responsible for reviewing files and determining trial and defense strategy. Be responsible for the investigation and preparation of cases for court. Draft and prepare written pleadings appropriate to each case. Prepare and file writs when appropriate. Comply with the Louisiana Public Defender Board Trial Court Compliance Standards (LAC 22:XV. Chapter 7). Maintain physical/electronic files and update the Defender Database as needed with the aid of Attorney’s assistant. Conduct trials (by jury or judge) when appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Staff Attorney/Section Chief or District Public Defender. Must be licensed with the Louisiana State Bar Association and be in good standing. Must be learned in Louisiana Statutory Criminal Law and Code of Evidence.
