Overview

Are you passionate about using your legal expertise to help others? Liberty Mutual Insurance is seeking a highly motivated lawyer to join our legal team as an Insurance Defense Attorney. This is a remote position with occasional required appearances in California. As an Insurance Defense Attorney, you will represent Liberty Mutual and our policyholders in moderately complex civil litigation matters involving claims for monetary damages or compensation for personal injuries or property damage of moderate value. You will have the opportunity to manage the entire legal process, from investigation and discovery through trial preparation and court proceedings. You will also have the chance to collaborate with and mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and law clerks, as well as develop and maintain relationships with internal and external partners.



Key Responsibilities:

Represent Liberty Mutual and our policyholders in moderately complex civil litigation matters
Manage the entire legal process from investigation and discovery through trial preparation and court proceedings
Research and develop appropriate legal strategies for all stages of litigation
Establish and maintain good relationships with claims representatives and insured clients
Conduct training sessions for Legal, Claims, or other departments
Provide guidance and direction to junior attorneys, paralegals, or law clerks
Develop and render clear, unambiguous legal opinions and strategies
Draft legal documents including pleadings and motions

Qualifications:

Membership in the California Bar
Appropriate special licenses to practice before boards or federal courts preferred
Minimum of three years of successful experience conducting discovery, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations, hearings, and trials
Workers' Compensation experience a plus but not required
Experience representing insurance companies
Strong relationship-building skills
Detail-oriented and analytical mindset
Deadline-driven and organized
Persuasive oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of insurance law and latest developments in the practice of law
Proficiency with technologies that reduce costs and facilitate remote work
JD degree
