Assistant Solicitor General Date Open: Immediately Date Closed: Until filled Title: Assistant Solicitor General Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications Location: Oklahoma City, OK or Tulsa, OK The Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General is currently seeking both junior and senior attorneys for our Solicitor General Unit. This is a unique opportunity for smart and dedicated attorneys to serve the public, appear before the highest courts in Oklahoma and the United States, and help establish precedent on the most important constitutional issues of our time. Position Summary: The Solicitor General Unit represents the interests of the State of Oklahoma in appeals in state and federal court, including at the Oklahoma Supreme Court and . Supreme Court. The Unit also litigates constitutional issues, such as the defense of state laws, in trial courts. The Solicitor General Unit plays a key role in the State’s interaction with the federal government, other States, and Native American Tribes, through litigation, amicus briefs, official letters, and cooperative efforts.
In 2021, the Oklahoma Legislature enacted House Bill 1236, which created within the Attorney General’s Office the State Reserved Powers Protection Unit. The new Unit will “monitor and evaluate any action by the federal government to determine if such actions are in violation of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.” Attorneys in the Solicitor General Unit will work in this new Unit to challenge federal actions that unlawfully infringe on state prerogatives. Duties for attorneys in these units include brief writing, presenting oral argument, managing cases, and working in teams on the State’s most important cases, and suggesting and pursuing ideas on proactive litigation to advance the State’s interests. The successful candidate will have outstanding legal judgment, excellent writing skills, and be able to effectively and professionally research, prepare, analyze and understand complex information and legal issues.
