Job Overview: A law firm in Costa Mesa, CA, is seeking a Technology Patent Agent to play a pivotal role in their intellectual property practice. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office, conducting prior art searches, and providing patentability analysis. Job Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Conduct prior art searches and perform in-depth analysis to assess patentability.
  • Engage in practice development activities to establish and nurture client relationships.
  • Create substantive client correspondence related to patent matters.
  • Instruct local counsel for foreign filings and respond to Office Actions.
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and other patent-related opinion projects.
  • Apply advanced concepts in various life sciences fields, with a particular emphasis on molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
  • Analyze scientific and technical documents, including previously published patent documents.
  • Draft new patent applications and convert provisional applications into utility applications.
  • Convert foreign filed applications into . applications and vice versa.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (or graduate degree) preferred, with a focus on electrical engineering. Degrees in computer science, software engineering, or related areas will also be considered.
  • Experience with display technologies (., LCD, OLED) or rechargeable battery technologies (., for electric vehicles) is a plus.
  • Prior experience in drafting patent applications and patent prosecution or experience examining patent applications at the . Patent and Trademark Office is preferred.
  • Eligibility to sit for the USPTO patent agent exam.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or graduate degree) in electrical engineering, computer science, software engineering, or related field.

Certifications:

  • Eligibility to sit for the USPTO patent agent exam.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent application drafting and prosecution.
  • Strong analytical skills for conducting prior art searches and patentability analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for client correspondence.
