A law firm is seeking a Construction Law Associate Attorney in Cerritos, CA, with the following responsibilities and qualifications:

Job Overview:

The Construction Law Associate Attorney will be responsible for handling construction contract claims, both public and private, with a focus on contract extras, delay damages, impact damages, and assessment of liquidated damages. They will also manage mechanic’s lien law, stop notices, bid protests, public contract law, prompt payment law, and payment and performance bonds.

Duties:

  • Handle construction contract claims, public and private, excluding construction defect work experience
  • Prepare cases for trial/arbitration, including participating in arbitration or trial proceedings
  • Manage mechanic’s lien law, stop notices, bid protests, and public contract law
  • Assess contract extras, delay damages, and impact damages
  • Understand and apply substantive law surrounding construction claims
  • Utilize knowledge of alternate project delivery methods
  • Conduct depositions of percipient and expert witnesses
  • Draft motions, depositions, and letters related to construction litigation issues
  • Prepare and execute discovery plans
  • Interact with clients professionally and competently, addressing legal and strategic practical issues
  • Take ownership of matters and develop strategic courses of action
  • Demonstrate a self-starting attitude and excellent follow-through skills

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience handling construction contract claims
  • Experience with arbitration and preparing cases for trial/arbitration
  • Knowledge of mechanic’s lien law, stop notices, bid protests, public contract law, prompt payment law, and payment and performance bonds
  • Familiarity with alternate project delivery methods
  • Deposition experience with both percipient and expert witnesses
  • Law and motion experience involving substantive law and discovery issues
  • Excellent writing skills for motions, depositions, and letters regarding construction litigation issues
  • Ability to handle and manage written discovery and depositions
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interface with clients professionally and competently

Education & Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the California State Bar
  • Any relevant certifications in construction law or arbitration are a plus

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of construction law principles
  • Proficiency in legal research and writing
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide effective solutions
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research databases
