Job Summary

Hon. Andrea Courtney, Third District Judge, chambered in Canyon County, is seeking a Staff Attorney/Law Clerk for a minimum one-year term. This is a non-classified position under the Canyon County Personnel System in which the incumbent serves at the pleasure of the appointing District Court Judge. The successful applicant must be a member in good standing of a state bar association or a recent graduate of an ABA-approved law school and have excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.

Job Responsibilities

The Staff Attorney/Law Clerk will be responsible for performing a variety of technical duties related to legal research required to expedite court cases heard by the District Judge. Responsibilities include conducting and performing research of statutes, ordinances, case decisions, law review articles, documents, treatises, briefs, memorandum decisions, administrative directives and other sources related to rules of procedure and related legal authorities; preparing research memoranda for consideration by the District Judge; reviewing and summarizing files in preparation for pre-trial conferences, pre-trial motion hearings, and trial; coordinating case processing; attending hearings on motions and trials; assisting the judge in reviewing and preparing proper jury instructions; assisting in drafting and preparing memorandum decisions and opinions; and reviewing and summarizing appeals from the magistrate division.

Job Requirements

To qualify for the position, applicants must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, possess excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, have top 25% of law school class and preferably have some previous litigation or judicial clerk experience. Applicants must also obtain licensure within the first six (6) months from hire and successfully complete a background investigation through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

Compensation

The annual salary for the Staff Attorney/Law Clerk position is $71,076+ DOE plus benefits. The application period ends when the position is filled.
