Duties:

- Provide competent and zealous representation and advocacy to indigent clients from motion for a new trial through direct appeal
- Represent clients in court at various stages of cases, including arraignments, preliminary and pretrial hearings, probation and sentencing, post-adjudication/post-conviction hearings, and appeals
- Negotiate on behalf of clients at all stages of the case
- Prepare and argue motions, conduct jury selection, make opening and closing statements, present evidence, question witnesses, and make appropriate objections and arguments
- Lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned co-workers
- Assist in cases of routine complexity
- Attend scheduled court appearances and coordinate with court administration, clients, witnesses, experts, and others
- Review discovery, interview clients, request and inspect records and evidence, and prepare graphics and exhibits
- Identify and interview witnesses and alibis, observe crime scenes, and subpoena witnesses
- Prepare clients for trial and determine the need for expert witnesses and psychological/psychiatric evaluations
- Secure mitigating evidence for sentencing or restitution and advocate for the client
- Argue mitigating evidence and negotiate resolutions with assistant district attorneys
- Research relevant case law and interpret in relation to the facts of the case
- Develop trusting and supportive attorney-client relationships
- Attend conferences, seminars, meetings, and training events relevant to the area of expertise
- Keep abreast of legal changes and participate in professional organizations
- Communicate with other legal professionals, witnesses, clients, and the public as needed

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia
- Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination or reciprocity and two years of relevant legal experience
- Three years of experience in criminal defense
- Proficiency in the performance of essential duties and responsibilities
- Knowledge of statutes, court decisions, federal and state laws, and local criminal laws
- Ability to plan the work of assigned staff
- Strong decision-making and communication skills
- High level of commitment and ethical conduct
