The State of Utah is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Highways & Utilities Division of the Attorney General’s Office. The successful candidate for this position will provide legal advice and representation to the Department of Public Safety in civil litigation and administrative proceedings.

Job Duties:

The Assistant Attorney General - Public Safety will be responsible for:

• Preparing cases by conducting legal research, preparing witnesses, and gathering evidence

• Providing consultation, making recommendations, giving appropriate advice, and/or facilitating decisions

• Drafting, reviewing, and recommending contract language

• Determining needs in discovery, and/or completing discovery; participating in decision making and strategy sessions in preparing cases for court and determining evidence to be used

• Writing or drafting correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials

• Receiving, researching and responding to incoming questions or complaints; providing information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution

• Representing the state or the employing agency in lawsuits, grievances, and complaints

• Drafting litigation working documents; preparing documents consisting of concise decisions based upon facts of case interpretations of law and compliance with state and federal standards

• Conducting conferences with defendants and/or attorneys and negotiating settlements

• Representing clients at formal or informal hearings

• Traveling to various locations and staying overnight, when necessary


Qualifications:

• degree

• Active membership in the Utah State Bar in good standing

• Knowledge of GRAMA and public ethics law

• Experience advising or representing a public agency, including any history working with law enforcement agencies

• Excellent written and oral advocacy skills

• Ability to provide general counsel advice to government agency clients

• Ability to immediately take over an existing caseload

• Valid driver license to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state

• Must be able to travel as required
