# 2024 Legal Internship Program

The . Department of Education** is pleased to offer a Legal Internship Program in its Office of the General Counsel’s (OGC). This program provides law students with an invaluable opportunity to develop legal and professional skills in research, writing, and advocacy, and to gain insight into various areas of OGC’s work, such as education law and policy, litigation, regulatory matters, employment and privacy law, and contracts.

## Qualifications

In previous years, selected interns have typically demonstrated strong academic achievement, excellent legal research and analytical skills, strong writing and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and an interest in the work of the Department. In select cases, the Department may consider a candidate who is an undergraduate or graduate student with a demonstrated interest in education law and policy.

## Internship Program Details

The program accepts up to six law students per term, with terms beginning in the spring, summer, and fall. Interns may work full-time in the summer, and full-time or part-time (., 20 hours per week) in the fall or spring in order to accommodate coursework and schedules. The Department is willing to work with institutions to ensure that interns receive academic credit for their internship work. This is an unpaid position.

## Professional and First-Hand Opportunities

Interns may attend congressional sessions or hearings, particularly on topics related to education. They may also attend speeches or events in which the Secretary of Education or other senior leaders are speaking. The Legal Internship Program is integrated with the Department’s broader intern program, providing interns with the opportunity to meet and socialize with other interns.
